A Place So Far,  A Place So Near..

A Place So Far, A Place So Near, A Place So Sweet, A Place So Dear — Four titles that together form a short poem, reflecting the concept behind this VR installation.

"A Place So Far" speaks to the vast, otherworldly dimensions of the virtual space, while "A Place So Near" symbolizes the intimate and immediate presence of the interactive experience. Together with "A Place So Sweet" and "A Place So Dear," the titles highlight the emotional resonance and nostalgic undertones of the journey, reminding participants of their human connection to the abstract.

This interactive VR installation invites visitors into a shared digital space where they can shape and transform their environment using only their hands. Central to the experience is a glowing, magical sphere—a tactile and symbolic gateway. Participants gather around this sphere on a physical platform, which becomes the heart of their journey.

Upon donning VR headsets, the physical space seamlessly transitions into the virtual realm. Touching the sphere activates the experience, bringing the layered environment to life. The installation responds to interactions in real-time, with visuals and sounds shifting unpredictably. Objects emerge in the foreground, while vast, dynamic backgrounds unfold in surprising ways. No two interactions are the same, making each journey unique to the group and their choices.

The installation offers an ever-changing blend of visuals and sounds that span from the micro to the macro. Participants are guided through intricate molecular fields, surreal abstract patterns, and cosmic scenes stretching to the farthest reaches of the universe. These layered environments blur the boundaries between foreground and background, intertwining in ways that create new compositions with every interaction.

The experience is both melancholic and futuristic, evoking feelings of awe, curiosity, and introspection.  Each visit becomes a singular moment of exploration and connection, where participants are not just observers but active creators of the worlds they navigate.

A Place So Far, A Place So Near, A Place So Sweet, A Place So Dear premiered November 2022 at De Helling in Utrecht and traveled to various locations since.
